Where to find Nicstalgia:
Tell us a bit about you
I’m a pop culture princess who loves music, dance, fashion, and art.
Tell us about your podcast and where we can listen
Nicstalgia is a video podcast where we have deep conversations about superficial things. Watch on YouTube and listen wherever you enjoy podcasts.
How would you describe your style?
Eclectic cosmopolitan maximalist with a sprinkle of kitsch
What nostalgic styles are you influenced the most by?
Spice Girls, Romy & Michele, Parker Posey in Party Girl, and 2000s Mary-Kate and Ashley
Favorite Britney song and album?
I can’t pick one! Top 3 are: “I Will Be There”, “Toxic”, and “Break The Ice”. For albums, it’s Britney and Blackout.
Favorite teen mags growing up?
J14, YM, and CosmoGirl!
I love your interior style that we see snaps of online. You can sense all the nostalgia but in a really unique way. What advice would you give someone who wants to bring nostalgia to their home in a modern way?
My interior style is very retro, eclectic, and midcentury-inspired, so having nostalgic accent pieces looks cohesive. Nostalgia in design doesn’t have to be overly kitschy, tacky, or gauche. Mix modern furniture with vintage accents or vice versa. Think museum vs. amusement park. Keep it simple and personal to you!
Do you have a dream podcast guest?
Celine Dion, Missy Elliott, Freddie Prinze Jr.
Disney channel or Nickelodeon growing up?
Nickelodeon!
Describe what one of your rooms was like growing up
My teenage bedroom was directly out of the Pottery Barn Teen catalogue. I’m a Pink and Green Girl! My bedspread was pink plaid and my closet and walls were painted different shades of pink. I had a green Papasan chair, white and green circular paper lanterns, tons of picture frames from Claire’s and The Icing, and an awesome karaoke machine.
An album that you would say best describes you
Drew’s Famous Smash Hits: Party Music (1998)! Fun, upbeat, and great to sing and dance with.
Do you own a lot of physical media still? I saw you recently did a podcast episode on this. If so what are some of your most treasured?
Most of what I own now is thrifted because I got rid of everything! My Physical Media Renaissance was a really meaningful project about memory, nostalgia, and our value systems of meaning. I’m obsessed with my transparent icy blue CD boombox, Spice Girls lollipops, and iZone camera.
Where do you hope nostalgia takes you in 5 years?
It’s already taken me where I wanted to go! Nostalgia for me is a sociocultural adventure, exploring memory, identity, and shared experience with family, friends, acquaintances, and other enthusiasts.
What I have noticed about your work is that you always spend a ton of time researching and giving really unique perspectives. What are some of your favorite aspects of the research process?
I’m a deep thinker who’s very curious, enjoys learning, has a really strong memory, and tends to be a completist. All of these qualities really support the research process. I love making connections between seemingly unrelated people or events and digging into the eccentricities and obscurities of something with surface-level popularity and mainstream appeal. I also enjoy learning statistics and dates to reinforce a historically accurate perception of a particular cultural zeitgeist.
What are some of your listeners or followers favorite subjects to chat about?
Spice Girls, dELiA*s, Limited Too, and MySpace, among many other things. People tell me amazing stories all the time, whether they know someone who was on a 90s-00s TV show, appeared as an extra in an emo band’s music video, or went to high school with a niche micro-celebrity.
Which fashion trend are you most excited about being back right now?
Dresses over jeans!
A phrase you would leave for a nostalchick
As my custom Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen artwork in WordArt font states, “Life is a work of art. You Gotta paint it colorful. You can make it anything you want. Don’t ever stick to any rules. You don’t need a high IQ to succeed in what you do. You just gotta have no doubt. Just believe in yourself.”
