Why should you keep an original copy before making raster image adjustments?

During raster image editing, avoid editing any original file and make sure to use layers and/or masks when available. Visuals Clipping recommends using a separate working file when editing a raster image to prevent that image from being permanently altered by cropping, retouching or compression. This will make it easy to edit and ensure that you can make alternative versions without marring the original photograph.
