Deep cycle vs regular battery – what do I actually need for my SUV?
Quote from michaelfocus on August 19, 2026, 2:23 amSo I'm in a bit of a dilemma and I'm hoping someone here can help me out because I've been reading so much online that my head is spinning. I drive a 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser that I use for both daily commuting and weekend desert trips with my family. We do quite a bit of camping and I've been thinking about adding some auxiliary lights and maybe a small fridge in the back for longer trips, but I'm worried about the battery situation. I've been told by a few people that if I'm going to run accessories with the engine off, I need a deep cycle battery rather than a regular starting battery because it can handle being discharged and recharged multiple times without getting damaged. But I'm not really sure if I actually need that or if a good quality starting battery would be enough for what I'm doing. I live near Bur Dubai and I've been looking for advice from people who actually use their SUVs for similar purposes. I found what looked like a pretty detailed Varta deep cycle battery guide for vehicle owners near Bur Dubai, and it explained the difference between starting batteries and deep cycle ones in a way that actually made sense. Apparently starting batteries are designed to deliver a quick burst of power to start the engine, while deep cycle batteries provide a steady current over a longer period and can handle being drained down to about 20% without causing damage. The guide also mentioned that some batteries, like AGM ones, can actually do both reasonably well because they have features that bridge the gap between starting and deep cycle performance. That's actually something I didn't know, I always thought it was one or the other. I'm now wondering if I should just go for a high-quality AGM battery that can handle both starting and running accessories, rather than trying to choose between two different types. The thing is, I don't really want to spend a fortune on a battery if I don't need all that capacity, but at the same time, I don't want to cheap out and end up stranded in the middle of the desert because my battery couldn't handle a small fridge and some lights. Has anyone here set up their SUV for camping and gone through this decision? I'd love to hear what battery you went with, how it's performed, and whether you think the deep cycle route is actually necessary or if a good starting battery with decent reserve capacity is enough. Also, if you've got any recommendations for where to buy quality batteries around Bur Dubai, I'd appreciate that too. I'm planning to make a decision in the next couple of weeks because the desert season is starting and I want to be ready. Thanks in advance for any advice.
